Description

Bembridge and Harrison, 1845

A truly green rose, in which all parts of the flower have been transformed into photosynthetic structures.

The petals, stamens, sepals — all of these are derivatives of foliage.

This mutation of the rose (from the variety Old Blush) is so subtle that geneticists have still not been able to isolate the gene responsible for these changes.

The flowers open green, then fade with age, taking on a beautiful copper tint, and remain on the bush for many weeks.

The shoots are flexible and covered with prickles, and the new growth is burgundy-coloured.

In cold climates, where the rose is forced to overwinter through winter, it is one of the first to bloom and one of the last to finish blooming in autumn.
